The government on Sunday issued an ultimatum, disseminated on radio and television, to the teachers, saying that if they did not show up for work they would be suspended for months without pay. 6. Justices to hear appeal over Wal-Mart gender pay lawsuit
By Bill Mears, CNN Supreme Court Producer
    March 28, 2011 -- Updated 1721 GMT (0121 HKT)

At issue is whether the justices should allow certification of the largest class-action employment lawsuit in U.S. history, a long-standing dispute against mega-corporation Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
The company is the world's largest retailer and the nation's largest private employer. If the class-action goes through, hundreds of thousands of women -- perhaps as many as 1.6 million plaintiffs --

The high court case is among the biggest of the current term, and could establish binding standards over high-stakes liability involving companies large and small.
Wal-Mart operates 4,300 facilities in the U.S., with more than $400 billion in global sales in 2009. It employs 1.4 million people in the U.S. alone.

Gisel Ruiz is an example of what Wal-Mart says is a person who started small but has risen in the company because of her talents and hard work. After beginning as a store management trainee nearly two decades ago in California, she is now executive vice president for people at Wal-Mart,
The workers bringing suit say women represent more than 70% of Wal-Mart's hourly workforce, but in the past decade made up less than one-third of its store management.

  7. Will Roger Federer rule in 2011?
Posted by: Candy Reid, CNN World Sport Anchor

After Wimbledon, several well-known commentators speculated that Roger Federer would never regain the number one ranking.
From his performance at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, I believe Federer could well take the 2011 season by storm. In a tournament which included the top 8 players in the world, the Swiss lost just one set throughout. That was in the final against Nadal, which in the end he won convincingly.
Agreed, the indoor surface suited Federer much more than the Mallorcan, but still, we know all about Nadal’s ability to win anywhere, anytime, don’t we?
The Spaniard was easily the man of 2010. He was superb in winning the final three majors, and I think he is also a fabulous ambassador for tennis.
It will be interesting to see if Nadal can keep up his stellar play next year. For me, he will have to in order to prevent Federer domination.
I asked a close acquaintance of Federer’s at the US Open why the Swiss was staying back so much. He told me that Roger wanted to show he could beat the best from the baseline.
His career goal is 20 majors. I wouldn’t be too surprised if, by this time next year, he’s nearing the mark, if not there!

  8. Survey shows we're too lazy about mobile phone security
    By Jolie O'Dell, Mashable

People nowadays are really not caring much about mobile phone security, letting them being cheated, or infested by mobile virus.

A new survey shows U.S. consumers are shockingly lax about basic security on their mobile phones.
Most of us have no qualms about making purchases via mobile that is a common vulnerability in web security. Yet in spite of these yellow flags, few of us use phone-locking passwords and duplicate the same passwords for mobile apps that we use on our desktops. One key finding we mentioned was the crossover between business and personal use of the same device. When it comes to the kind of data that puts consumers at further risk, 66% of respondents said they kept personal and personally identifiable data on their phones, and we’re not as wary as we should be about mobile viruses, either. Roughly 67% of consumers surveyed said they were concerned about receiving marketing ads and promotions, but just 44% said they were worried about the possibility of a mobile virus attack. A full 12% have been the target of attempted mobile payment fraud. And in spite of all these security risks, less than half of consumers in this survey used keypad locks or passwords to secure their mobile devices.

Japanese authorities on Monday ANNOUNCED a tsunami advisory after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake off the country's northeast COASTLINE CREATED little more than ripples. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged coastal INHABITANTS to STAY GEARED UP to LEAVE BECAUSE OF the CONSTANT threat of aftershocks that MIGHT spawn tsunamis. Hirofumi Yokoyama, a meteorological REPRESENTATIVE, ALLEGED Monday’s temblor was the MOST RECENT OF A SEQUENCE of aftershocks to rattle the region EVER SINCE a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it triggered devastated coastal villages, killed thousands of INHABITANTS and POSITIONED off Japan's MOST TERRIBLE nuclear CATASTROPHE EVER SINCE World War II.
"We have to be ready for jolts with the intensity of 6 or so, and so people have to be on the alert," Yokoyama told reporters. He also said that aftershocks of this magnitude could still produce dangerous tsunamis.

  17. Scientists fight flames with electric wand
    By: Jason Hanna, CNN
The chemistry team in Harvard University just starts looking at how electric fields' effects scale to the size of flames and in this way form an electric field to stop flames. In a new study, Harvard University scientists say they used an electric field to extinguish an open flame more than 1 foot tall. Chemistry professor George M. Whitesides, connected a 600-watt amplifier to a metal wire that was fixed in place and pointed at the base of a methane flame. The wand-like wire, serving as an electrode, generated an oscillating electric field that essentially pushed the flame off its fuel source. The electric field exerts force on charged particles in the flame, causing those particles to move quickly. The team did extinguish a wood fire with an electric field too. Firefighters might carry a device in a backpack and distribute the electric field with a handheld wand, perhaps creating viable escape paths if nothing else.

THIS team in Harvard University just BEGINSINVESTIGATING at how electric fields' CONSEQUENCESCHART to the size of flames and in this way MAKE an electric field to DELETE flames. In a RECENT study, Harvard University CHEMISTRIESsay they used an electric field to FINISH an open flame more than 1 foot tall. Chemistry professor George M. Whitesides, connected a 600-watt amplifier to a metal wire that was REPAIRED in place and SHOWED at the base of a methane flame. The wand-like wire, serving as an electrode, FORMED an oscillating electric field that SUCCESSFULLY pushed the flame off its fuel source. The electric field PUSHES force on charged particles in the flame, causing those particles to move FASTLY. The team did DESTROYED a woods’FLAMES with an electric field too. Firefighters might TAKE a device in a backpack and USE the electric field with a handheld wand, perhaps creating viable escape WAYS if nothing else.

  20. Venezuela's Chavez receives press freedom award in Argentina

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was given a prestigious journalism award in Argentina on Tuesday, despite his frequent and outspoken criticism of media outlets at home and abroad. Chavez received the Rodolfo Walsh journalism award from Argentina's Universidad Nacional de La Plata "for his unquestionable and authentic commitment to support the freedom of peoples." During a raucous, two-hour acceptance speech in front of hundreds of students and the university's journalism faculty. The Rodolfo Walsh award, given to people who advance the cause of press freedom, is named in honor of the late Argentine journalist who was killed in 1977 during Argentina's "Dirty War," when military leaders systematically eliminated dissident voices. Walsh was also a co-founder of Prensa Latina, Cuba's state-run news agency. Past award winners include Argentine journalists Joaquin Morales Sola and Tomas Eloy Martinez. Flush with petrodollars, Chavez's government in 2005 helped create Telesur, a state-funded television network that covers news from throughout Latin America and the globe. Telesur has been championed as an alternative voice to privately owned media conglomerates, but also criticized for its one-sided coverage of Chavez. Journalists and politicians in Argentina criticized the choice of Chavez as the award recipient, claiming that he has continually worked to silence his critics and suppress freedom of the press throughout Venezuela. "Chavez has closed more than 30 radio stations and six television channels and constantly threatens to take away broadcast licenses of any media that is at all critical of his administration," said Jorge Macri, a congressman from Buenos Aires province. The award ceremony in Argentina came two days after protesters prevented trucks carrying Argentina's two largest daily newspapers, Clarin and La Nacion, from leaving the printing press. "The Argentine government needs to take immediate measures to sanction this disregard and violation of a judicial ruling that constitutes an attack on freedom of the press"
