  2. Greyhounds Injured, Killed in West Virginia Dog Races
    By Brandon Bosworth

Greyhounds are placed at great risk in the state's dog races. Is it okay for dogs to suffer injury and death just so people can watch them run around a track and promoters can make some cash? In West Virginia, apparently so. At just one racetrack more than 3,200 injuries were reported, from the beginning of 2005 to the end of 2010, an average of about 1.4 injuries per day. "In terms of the raw number of injuries, this is the largest we have seen for a single track by far," said Carey Theil. State records confirm that thousands of greyhound injuries have been reported and nearly 200 dogs have died. Track executive and animal exploiter Dan Adkins doesn't really care about any of this. The disgraceful, inhumane practice of dog racing is fully legal in seven U.S. states, it's time for West Virginia to join the 21st century and outlaw dog racing.

PETA was asking for the teacher to be fired, and it shall be like that, but the Florida School District should use this incident as an opportunity to re-examine the pedagogy behind dissection in the classroom.

  6. We're Not Laughing: Nickelodeon's iCarly Mocks Homeless
    by Taylor Leake • February 15, 2011

Nickelodeon is the most watched children´s television network and reaches more than 214 homes worldwide. It has a huge influence on young people. The iCarly show has made a habit of making fun of homeless people. While the show may not intend for its hobo jokes to offend anyone, it sends the message that is okay to laugh at people because of their financial situation. The kids shouldn't be learning that the poor and homeless deserve ridicule on top of the unthinkable hardships they already bear. So Please write to Philippe P. Dauman, the CEO of Viacom (the company that owns Nickelodeon). Tell him that you find iCarly's hobo jokes inappropriate and insensitive and ask him to apologize.

  10. New Yorkers Rally Behind Embattled Park Slope Bike Lane
    by Zachary Shahan •
In November 2010, Molly Mann covered a heated debate over a colorful bike lane in New York. The green, two-direction bike lane has been in place since last summer and the result of improving the Big Apple's cycling infrastructure in New York. Some Park Slope residents are opposed. They think it has a neggative effect in the neighborhood. Now things are heating up again. UK's Guardian is covering the story, and calling the New York Times for some reporting. On Thursday, a meeting in the neighborhood, days after the lawsuit , brought a ton of people out, with sayings against the lane.
"I think it's clear tonight that there's probably an 8-to-1 ratio of supporters versus opponents," said neighbor Eric McClure. "I think that speaks to how important this project is and how widely embraced in the neighborhood it is." Those opposed to the bike lane sayed that overwhelming´s presence was due to the activist efforts of NYC's clean transportation group, bicycle supporters from around the city.
If Transportation Alternatives didn´t had some friends from other parts of the city involved, it there would be overwhelming support for the new street design, which has improved on the street according to findings of the Department of Transportation. 3,000 people discovered that 71% of the neighborhood supports the safer design and 78% of Brooklyn residents as a whole support it. “I am so grateful for the Prospect Park West bike lane," 54-year-old Elizabeth Elkind said last Thursday. "It has improved the quality of my life. Thank you. Please keep it.” She walks slowlyby her disability but still rides bicycle in the neighborhood.Help support the bike lane and the city's work to improve transportation options, the health of residents, and the environment by signing a pettition.
